LoonieLand™

“LoonieLand™: A village that works — for the unhoused and the unheard.”

🌀 Why the Name “LoonieLand™”?

We know — it’s an unusual name.

But LoonieLand™ was chosen on purpose. Not to mock. Not to label. But to highlight a reality many avoid:

A significant portion of the unhoused population suffers from mental health challenges.

Not all.
Not even most.

But enough to matter deeply — and enough to require a different kind of response. We created LoonieLand™ with them in mind.
  • The ones who’ve fallen through every crack.
  • The ones who scare people off before they’re ever heard.
  • The ones we’re taught to walk past… or fear… or forget.

  • Here, we remember.
Here, we build a community that includes them — not by accident, but by design. A place where the stable can support the struggling. Where dignity, safety, and purpose are given back to those who've lost them.

    That’s what LoonieLand™ means:
    A little tongue-in-cheek, maybe — but 100% heart.

    🌀 What is “LoonieLand”?

LoonieLand™ is a bold, ground-up response to a crisis that top-down systems have failed to solve. It’s a model village designed to shelter, empower, and transition the unhoused — not by pushing them aside, but by building with them. More than just housing, it’s a living framework rooted in community, safety, choice, and human dignity. Imagine:
    • A freedom zone where rough sleepers can crash anywhere while others can pitch tents in a Skid Row-like settings but safer, semi-structured environments.
    • Fire bins for warmth and group gatherings — recreating the campfire circle dynamic
    • Pet-friendly areas, couple-friendly setups, and communal hangouts
    • Harm reduction, safety, trust, and recovery for addicts
    • A core campus with food, hygiene, services, and support for those ready to transition.
    • A governance system powered in part by capable unhoused residents helping others.
It’s not a pipe dream. It’s practical. It’s ready. And it’s something no city agency has ever dared to build. LoonieLand™ is both a movement and a model. It’s a call to action — for donors, advocates, residents, and policy-shapers alike. Together, we can build the village that works.

    🧠 Why LoonieLand™?

Los Angeles has been fighting homelessness for decades.

    We’ve had 10-Year Plans. 5-Year Plans. 3-Year Emergency Responses.

We’ve launched Inside Safe, Project Roomkey, Measure HHH, Safe Sleep sites, Navigation Centers, and hundreds of ‘temporary’ shelters.
We’ve created offices, agencies, task forces, committees, czars, and liaisons.

And we’ve spent over $13 billion in the past 10 years.

We’ve deployed thousands of outreach workers, case managers, clinicians, and officers. Built $750,000 apartments. Signed hundreds of hotel contracts, if not paying premiums for hotels outright which are still currently vacant.

And today—after all of that—homelessness is worse than ever.
Encampments have multiplied. Businesses are leaving. Residents are frustrated. And the people we’re supposed to be helping? Still out there. Still suffering.

This isn’t failure by accident. It’s failure by design.

Because we keep trying to fix the streets from above… instead of building something from the ground up.

It’s time to stop throwing money into a system that doesn’t work and finally build one that does.
