LoonieLand™ didn’t come from a government office or corporate boardroom. It was born out of frustration, heartbreak, and a refusal to accept the status quo.
After years of witnessing failed programs, mismanaged billions, and worsening conditions on our streets, a group of concerned citizens, advocates,
and creatives came together with one question:
“What if we stopped trying to fix the system... and started building something better?”
That spark ignited the LoonieLand™ Movement.
🌀 Why the Name LoonieLand™?
We chose the name LoonieLand™ with a touch of boldness and a lot of heart.
The name LoonieLand™ is intentionally provocative — but not flippant.
It speaks to a hard truth: Mental illness plays a profound role in homelessness, yet is rarely addressed in citywide solutions.
Society often labels these individuals “crazy,” then looks away. We don’t.
Not everyone experiencing homelessness has mental health issues — far from it. But those who do are often the most isolated,
the least served, and the most misunderstood.
LoonieLand was designed with them in mind.
Not to marginalize — but to center.
Not to stigmatize — but to support.
Because a real solution must include everyone. Especially those who can’t ask for help.
Yes, the name is a little offbeat — but so is the system we’re trying to fix.
LoonieLand™ is our way of saying:
“It’s time to stop doing what doesn’t work — and try what just might.”
🏕️ What Is LoonieLand™?
LoonieLand™ is a model village designed to meet people where they are—especially those the system continues to leave behind.
It’s structured into three zones:
Zone B – Outdoor freedom: a safe space for “rough sleepers” to camp, gather, and heal without shame Zone T – Transitional buffer: a place for integration and peer-led support
Zone A – Structured core: access to transitional housing, mental health support, and vocational training
This is not just a shelter.
It’s a community.
It’s designed with insight from those who’ve lived through homelessness and supported by everyday people who want change.
🧩 Why This Model Works
Too often, we force people into systems that don’t fit their needs. LoonieLand™ is built on the belief that:
Safety and freedom are not mutually exclusive
Healing happens through dignity, not enforcement
Those who’ve survived the streets know best how to help others off them
Real change comes from the ground up
🤝 Who’s Behind This?
LoonieLand™ is a grassroots initiative run by volunteers, creatives, policy-watchers, and everyday Angelenos. While not a formal nonprofit (yet),
we operate with a deep commitment to transparency, sustainability, and community ownership.
We seek support - financial, collaborative, creative - and welcome partnerships with:organizations, developers, funders, universities, philanthropists,
foundations, and businesses who believe real change begins from the ground up.
